It was a record turnout at the Petaluma Farmers’ Market this Saturday for the Bill Soberanes Memorial Petaluma Whiskerino 2011. Hundreds of spectators showed up to cheer for almost 60 contestants with facial hair of all shapes, sizes, colors and lengths, including our first natural Femme-Stache entrant. Oh, and Santa(?).
As always, there were some clear winners and some sorta-subjective ones, but all in attendance will attest this was the largest and most fun Whiskerino in its long and hairy history. Much thanks to our Homegrown Supporters and Emcee Bill Hammerman (as Petaluma historical figure William Howard Pepper). Super-special thanks to our eagle-eye judges:
Mike “The Legend” Ayala from Mike’s Barber Shop, Jeremy Grenert of Lagunitas Brewing Company, City Councilwoman and Congressional Candidate Tiffany Renée, and bearded Petalumite Mark Medeiros.
The creative folks at Petaluma’s DNK Digital set up a pop-up photo booth to snap the fantastically-follicled photos below. Be sure to click the full gallery link at the bottom.
These will be available for purchase at Petaluma Whiskerino 2011 on Saturday October 8th at the Petaluma Farmers’ Market. To be safe, you might wanna go ahead and order yours now straight from the artist extraordinaire himself, Timothy McSweeney.
Are you growing to be there? There’s still time. Register now.
Announcing a new category for Petaluma Whiskerino …
THE TIMED GROWTH CATEGORY
Not everyone has the gumption (or job) to be a 365-day Beardo. So we’ve created a separate category to let the non-annual growers really shine. And give ‘em one more excuse to join in the fine-follicled fun. Here’s how:
1. Take one last shave (at least until after Whiskerino, October 8th)
2. Snap a photo of your freshly-shorn face with that day’s newspaper. Yup, ransom style.
3. Email it to info@petalumawhiskerino.com
4. Enjoy your 3-month shaving sabbatical. You’ve got a great excuse.
Every year gentlemen far and near seek new ways to gain an edge in the great Petaluma Whiskerino facial hair competition.
Some contestants even turn to beard “fibering”. For reasons of ethics and risk, these artificial follicle enhancers are frowned upon by champions and judges alike. This contestant learns why.
